Mark Hix is a Los Angeles based artist, whose paintings and sculptures are known for their expressive style and spiritual overtones. Anachronistic by nature, his work speaks to an admiration for the art of the modern era. Born in Philadelphia in 1964, but raised in a mid-west suburb of Chicago, Hix made his way to the downtown lofts of Los Angeles by the end of the 1990’s. The early years involved many jobs in construction field as well as some time as a scenic painter. At the age of 27, a serious, self taught study in art began to arise, and within a few years it had become a full-time vocation. Recent works have focused on figurative painting. Subject matter centers primarily on nature scenes, portraits of literary icons, social rebels, and other heroes of the human spirit.
Billy Hix is a painter of extraordinary creativity. His prolific output of fun, sometimes bizarre and disturbing paintings often overshadow each painting's unique qualities. An early exposure to 1970's comic art and the mind-bending surrealism of Dali are easily recognizable to many. A life changing accident at the age of 18 would lead to years of personal struggle that would eventually manifest in an explosion of color, twisted forms and abstract perspectives.
Fun at first glance, these paintings are not for the kids. Nothing is off limits. Billy's work is a testament to the honest, brutal, but sweet nature of his communication. A Los Angeles based artist, his work is collected internationally.
